Barbara Techel didn’t have a life plan to write children’s stories, or to learn the ropes of self-publishing. Now she does both, and shares how.
Before she became a successful children’s author, Barbara had a love of animals that led her to write a column in the local paper. Then one day her dog, Frankie, suffered a ruptured disc, leaving her hind legs permanently paralyzed. After that Frankie’s care regimen changed significantly, and she could only stay mobile with the help of a dog cart, but Techel says Frankie remained as happy as ever.
Inspired by the way Frankie’s spirit never wavered, Barbara found a new reason to write. She began writing children’s stories about Frankie’s positive outlook on life despite the new challenges she was facing. Together, Barbara and Frankie visit assisted living homes to provide therapy, and write the Frankie, The Walk ‘N Roll Dog books to spread the positive message. They also tour the country, giving talks at schools and spreading the message of hope and happiness after a life-changing disaster.
